Celebrating Freedom

Liberty Bell“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1).

In 1776, our new nation’s brave leaders pledged “our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.” They risked everything for the freedom of self-governance. We celebrate this freedom today in parades, picnics, pyrotechnics and patriotism.

Yet true freedom is not fully ours until we stand firm against our own enslaving self-righteousness and legalism. May Jesus set us free to be nurses who humbly reflect his compassion, mercy and loving-kindness to all those entrusted to our care.
